In this video a 62-year-old female has severe left optic neuropathy for which a large sphenoidotomy has been performed. Thick bone is present at the entrance of the optic canal known as the optic ring. A diamond burr is used to remove the thick bone at the entrance of the optic canal. After careful thinning, the bone drilling continues along the optic canal. It is then elevated with a microcurette or spatula. Care is taken that the nerve fibers are not injured during this process.
