“Sì“ (“Yes“) served as the Italian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, ultimately securing the second position, trailing behind the Swedish entry “Waterloo“ performed by ABBA. Gigliola Cinquetti, born on December 20, 1947, in Verona, Italy, gained national prominence at the age of 16. She, along with Patricia Carli, won the San Remo Festival in 1964 with “Non ho l’età.“ This victory made her the youngest Eurovision Song Contest participant at the time. Representing Italy in Copenhagen, she secured Italy’s first-ever win at Eurovision, earning nearly three times as many points as the runner-up. “Non ho l’età“ became a European hit, and Cinquetti recorded the song in multiple languages.
In 1966, she returned to Sanremo as part of a duo with Domenico Modugno, winning again but not representing Italy at Eurovision. In 1974, Gigliola Cinquetti participated once again in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Sì.“ The Italian broadcaster RAI faced criticism for the choice of the song during a time when Italy was holding a referendum on the legalization of divorces. Due to the frequent use of the word “sì“ (yes) in the song, concerns arose that it could influence the referendum results. Despite the controversy, Cinquetti lost the competition to the Swedish band ABBA. Her English version of “Sì,“ titled “Go,“ achieved a top 10 position in the United Kingdom. Following Toto Cutugno’s Eurovision win in 1990, Gigliola Cinquetti co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 in Rome alongside Cutugno. In 2022, during the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Cinquetti performed her winning song from 1964.
