This approach requires a small incision on the back and can be done as a minimally invasive procedure through a 1 inch portal. Initial supplemental posterior fixation is used to considerably enhance the stability of the motion segment. The traditional T-L-I-F approach requires that the facet joint be removed to access the spine. This allows the implant to be delivered without manipulating the spinal cord. The surgeon can then remove the diseased disc nucleus to prepare the vertebral bodies for fusion. First bone graft is placed in anterior disc space. After the disc is prepared, a biocompatible polymer implant is filled with bone graft material and placed in the disc space.
