Schizocephala bicornis eats a cricket

Can an insect get more alien than this? The Indian Stick Mantis is one of the larges species by body length. This subadult female enjoys a cricket as she prepares to become an adult. Take notice of the foreshortened raptorial claws on this species. This is a general indication they prefer flying prey, making it easy to hold small wings, but limiting their ability to deal with other prey. This cricket is about the largest food item she can handle.
