Am Brunnen vor dem Tore [German folk song][+English translation]

Am Brunnen vor dem Tore is the first verse of a German song, which has become known both in the form of an art song and in the form of a folk song. The original title is Der Lindenbaum. The text was written by Wilhelm Müller and belongs to a cycle of poems, which Müller inscribed with Die Winterreise. Franz Schubert set the entire cycle of poems under the title Winterreise and in this context also the Lindenbaum as an art song. In the most famous and popular adaptation of Schubert’s setting by Friedrich Silcher, the work has become a folk song. For this version, the opening verse of the poem has become a title.
