Iranian president confirmed dead in helicopter crash

Ebrahim Raisi, the Iranian president, has been killed along with his foreign minister after a helicopter crash on Sunday. State media confirmed that there were no survivors in the accident, which took place as the president was returning from a visit to neighbouring Azerbaijan. Footage of the wreckage aired on state TV shows the helicopter has disintegrated after crashing into a forested mountain in Iran’s East Azerbajian province, with only part of the tail intact. Iranian officials had blamed the accident on a malfunction and bad weather, which hampered rescue efforts overnight. Raisi, 63, had been accompanied by Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the foreign minister, and several other officials.
