Welcome to Clifford A. Bates, Jr Presents, Reading Rousseau’s Social Contract. Today we are reading and going over Book I, chapter 1-4 of Rousseau’s Social Contract. I am using the volume edited by Roger D Masters, and translated by Judith R Masters, published by St. Martin’s Press, 1978. Scott in Major Political Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (University of Chicago Press, 2014). I have chosen to use Masters’ translation because I knew him well and that was the edition I spent most of my life using.
