Weeks after the infamous “Montreal Screwjob“, the Hitman showed up on WCW Nitro and fans were confused when Bret was named as a special referee for a Eric Bischoff match at Starrcade. It was a sign of things to come, as many felt that Bret’s entire WCW run didn’t live up to expectations. When Vince Russo took over creative duties in mid ’99, things would seemingly get better for Bret. Hart would win the WCW World Championship at the Mayhem PPV, but the following month, Hart would have the match that pretty much ended his career. Bret Hart vs Goldberg happened at Starrcade 1999, and a kick from Goldberg ended up leaving Bret with no choice; he had to retire from professional wrestling.
