Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - 6 Fugues, Op. 17

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s set of 6 Fugues was written in 1875, while serving as a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The professorship resulted in him not only teaching, but also learning more about the classical rules of music, and led to him adhering more closely to those classical models. The Fugues were a result of his increasing attachment to academicism and increasing distance from Mily Balakirev’s autodidactic ideals, and this distance has led to criticism from fellow nationalists who supported Balakirev’s cause.
