Elusive Commander Behind Biggest Hamas Operation? How Mohammed Deif Has Evaded Israel For Decades

Palestinian militant organisation Hamas’s multi-pronged raid on October 7 took Israel by surprise. Hamas and a smaller group named Islamic Jihad also brought more than 130 people from inside Israel into Gaza as captives. According to Deif, the operation was launched in response to the “16-year blockade of Gaza, the Israeli occupation”. He also cited Israeli raids inside West Bank, violence at Al Aqsa, increasing attacks by settlers and the growth of settlements.
