THE WESTMINSTER BAGRATION TIARA Attributed to J B Fossin C1810 THE FACTS The Bagration tiara - diamonds, pink spinels and gold. The tiara dates to about 1810. Attributed to J B Fossin & Fils, a predecessor of the French jewellery firm Chaumet. Made for the young widow of Prince Peter Ivanovitch Bagration, the Russian beauty, Princess Catherine (1783 - 1857), who was raised at the Russian imperial court. However, perhaps it was acquired, and for her it was named. The full set includes the tiara, a matching hair comb, a necklace of six pink spinels and diamond plaques with several pendants, and a pair of pendant earrings. A modern sale placed it in a collection of note. The 6th Duke of Westminster purchased the tiara and suite in 1978 for his fiancee, Natalia Phillips (who has Russian ancestry herself), and she wore it on their wedding day in October 1978.
