It was a distinct kingdom for centuries, gradually assimilated by Japan during the Meiji era, until it became officially a Japanese prefecture in 1879. Besides distance and a special geographic situation, that kingdom was under the political influence of both China and Japan (from the early 17th century for Japan), which explains the originality of its martial tradition compared to other traditional Japanese martial arts.
