U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will square off in November after clinching their respective parties’ nominations in this week’s primaries. The largely unwanted rematch marks the country’s first face-off between a current and a former president in over a century. Who’s more likely to win, what are the central election issues, and how would election results impact Korea’s security and the economy? For an in-depth analysis of the re-match, we’re joined by Kim Yang-gyu, Principal Researcher at the East Asia Institute in the studio. Also with us this evening is Chris Casquejo, Correspondent at VOA. (Casquejo) Q1. Primary elections in Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington handed Biden the Democratic nomination and Trump the nod from the Republican Party, with no big surprises. Give us your analysis of those primaries, and the remaining electoral procedures. (Casquejo) Q2. According to a poll by Emerson College conducted right after Super Tuesday, Trump and Biden tied nationally, with 45 percent support each. But when undecided voters were forced to pick a side, Biden took a 51 percent to 49 percent lead. What’s your analysis of the poll results? (KIM) Q3. The North Korea policy of Biden and Trump is expected to show a stark contrast. First looking into Biden’s policy, he has succeeded in bolstering trilateral security cooperation, showing strong commitment in America’s extended deterrence against North Korea threats. But the nuclear impasse continues with no viable solution in sight. Do you expect Biden to maintain a similar strategy during his second presidency? (KIM) Q4. Trump is yet to offer a glimpse of hints on his North Korea policy. But judging from what we saw during his first presidency, including the historic Hanoi Summit in 2018, what policy direction do you expect from Trump? (Casquejo) Q5. The November election will likely hinge on who can win in the most closely contested states. Among the key swing states include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Nevada. How are Biden and Trump handling central issues in the election to win more swing voters? While both are largely considered unpopular, who’s leading the polls in key swing states? (KIM) Q6. South Korea and the U.S. have appointed chief negotiators for defense cost-sharing talks a bit earlier than usual. Is this due to complications that may arise from Trump’s possible comeback? (KIM) Q7. On the economy, Biden has picked the U.S. IRA as one of his administration’s key achievements. Trump, on the other hand, has vowed to scrap Biden’s landmark IRA, already starting to unnerve Korean companies as well as stock markets. How would Trump and Biden’s respective economic policies impact Korea? (Casquejo) Q8. The Trump-Biden rematch has already begun, but they largely remain unpopular due to their age challenge and legal challenge. What will be the former and current president’s biggest risks ahead?
