From our 21st century perspective we must take what we can get. The present recording comes to us in a less than optimal state; but we are given his only surviving recording of the Mahler 6th Symphony. Although every effort was made to make it as listenable as possible, some sonic flaws remain. The Sixth Symphony is, in many respects, seen as Mahler’s least popular symphony by some, but it is also one of his most personal statements. Audiences of his time did not take to the symphony very well. From our personal perspective it has always been a favorite for the very same reasons his contemporaries were confused by it. Of all of Mahler’s work, the sixth symphony is, perhaps, one of his most prophetic. As in the Seventh Symphony, the composer seems to find himself on the cusp between an age of romanticism and the cold, dark era which would become the early 20th century.
