FLOWER HORN CICHLIDS are ornamental aquarium fish noted for their vivid colours and the distinctively shaped heads for which they are named. Their head protuberance or “KOK“ is formally termed a nuchal hump.
They are man-made hybrids, first emerge for sale in the aquarium market in Malaysia in the late 1990’s and soon became popular in many countries in Asia and nowadays even reaching fish hobbyist in Europe, America and India.
First developed in Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan, some are released in the wild and became invasive pest animal. They have a lifespan of 10-12 years, kept in water temperature between 80-85 degrees F.
Generally male #flowerhorns are bigger than the female and majority of males are sterile meaning cannot reproduce, so finding one is time consuming, hobbyist must wait 8-10 months for a male fish to reach sexual maturity then pair it with the female to test fertility.
