Many Belarusians affectionately refer to their mother tongue as “mova“: the language. In 2023, “mova“ was voted as the top choice in the Belarusian Word of the Year survey. The respondents clearly recognized the vital importance of preserving their native language in these trying times. However, Belarusian speakers are faced with daily discrimination in their home country, ranging from verbal abuse to arrests. Why is it happening?
