1957 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

THE SECOND YEAR ... In 1956 under new coach Hector “Toe“ Blake and with the infusion of rookie skills from Henri Richard, Claude Provost, Jean-Guy Talbot and Bob Turner added to the super star talents of Richard, Beliveau, Harvey and goalie Jacques Plante, the powerful Canadiens swept to an exciting Cup victory over the powerful Detroit Red Wings. But now it was 1957 and a new challenger emerged, the Boston Bruins coached by the greatest Bruin of them all, Milt Schmidt. Two rookies were added to the 1956 powerhouse, Centre Phil Goyette and left wing Andre Pronovost. With right wing Claude Provost, they became the new Montreal checking line, behind the high scoring units of Maurice and Henri Richard with Dickie Moore, Jean Beliveau, Bernie Geoffrion and Bert Olmstead. Jacques Plante won the Vezina Trophy, Doug Harvey the Norris and the Canadiens easily eliminated New York in five games, while Boston upset Detroit in seven.
