Featuring a 455 cubic inch Rocket V8, a tough 4-speed transmission and flashy looks that swap ’70s glam for middle-of-the-road sophistication, this 442 is a car that’s nice enough to covet but not so pristine you’ll be afraid to hit the road!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Assembled in Lansing, Michigan during the fourth week of October, 1969, this awesome Oldsmobile is an impeccably restored classic that, according to its previous owner, still features all-original sheetmetal. During an extensive, ground-up restoration, that solid profile was decked in correct Fire Red base, trimmed with classy stripes and sealed in glossy clear. And roughly 700 miles later, the car rolls as one razor-sharp coupe that mixes minimalist looks with a no-nonsense demeanor.
ENGINE
It’s not immediately apparent why this Olds’ body carries so much sizzle; that is, until you see what’s under its hood. Twist the locks, fling the resin and you’ll find 455 cubic inches of Rocket V8 that’s branded with a correct 396021F casting number. Stomp the throttle and a restored Quadrajet 4-barrel mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with a steady stream of wind that’s supplied by a cowl-fed air cleaner. At the base of that carb, a cast iron intake frames a traditional points distributor and proven Packard TV R Suppression Cables, which snake around correct *à*E*à* heads and stamped and painted valve covers. Below those covers, freshly restored exhaust manifolds shoot charred dinosaurs in to big, true-dual pipes. Mechanically, the stout mill is all day reliable, spinning 500 lb./ft. of rock-crushing torque from one of the largest and most powerful valvetrains ever created. Aesthetically, familiar plastic fenders and Metallic Blue block skin look fantastic against the car’s bright body. And there’s a roster of high quality ancillaries that includes hardware for factory air conditioning.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
The Rocket 455 fronts a tough Borg Warner 4-speed, which twists power to a correct, 12-bolt axle and highway-friendly gears. That smooth driveline hangs in a familiar Heavy Duty Suspension, which, along with the car’s chassis, was carefully restored during the ground-up reboot. Solid stops are provided by rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of factory power steering. And everything rolls on chrome Magnum 500s, which spin 245/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around rocket-branded center caps.
INTERIOR
Inside this impressive coupe, you’ll find a correct Ivory interior that’s both comfortable and appealing. At the center of the car, stainless-trimmed seats ride on fresh carpet that’s protected by 442 floor mats. A wood-trimmed dash hangs basic telemetry above an upgraded radio and factory air conditioning. At the base of that dash, a slim boot frames a broad Hurst shifter. And in front of the driver, a Sport Steering Wheel laps a bright rocket emblem.
