Spittlebugs making spittle

this is a time lapse video of spittlebugs nymphs, from the family Cercopidae, Order (or suborder) Homoptera. The nymphs will pump bubbles into fluid that comes out of their anus in order to hide themselves from predators and well as keep their soft exoskeletons moist. Adult spittlebugs are also known as Froghoppers. The nymphs usually appear in Oregon around May. This video was shot using a Celestron USB digital microscope and some free security time-lapse software in Summer 2008.
