Giardiasis is a common enteric infection caused by the protozoan Giardia lamblia (also known as G. duodenalis or G. intestinalis). Transmission usually occurs via the faecal-oral route when travelling and is characterised by gastrointestinal symptoms (eg. diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, greasy stools, bloating, nausea, vomiting and weight loss). However, 50% of infections are asymptomatic.
