Neutral Chords in Functional Harmony?!

Here is a basic usage of Neutral Seventh chords in common progressions. In this usage, it functions as an intramediant movement, so incredibly useful. There are so many valuable ways to utilize neutral chords but this is a very “backwards“ compatible progression that we can exploit all over diatonic and chromatic progressions to introduce neutral quality. Stripped down to it’s smallest parts and rooted we get: Imaj7 - ^Ineu7 - iiimin7 It’s almost like a backdoor progression with awesome vibes inside mediant movement. It plugs in naturally anywhere we would do a basic mediant shift in harmony. For example, we often see a shift from Imaj7 to iiimin7 to reset towards VI. VI - II - V - I - iii - VI, etc We can exploit that mediant turnaround and use the Maj7 - neu7’s common tones to create smooth voice leading back into the diatonic area with a bit of intrigue along the way! #musictheory #harmony #microtonal #31edo
