Lonely-Man’s Lazarus - A Brief Animation Tutorial (pause to read!)

I decided I would make a brief tutorial here on how I go about animating! I decided against covering the technical terms or the principles of animation since there are just so many videos covering it I wanted to find away to explain how I’ve curated my animation style to myself. Animation is just such an interesting medium because it is so personal to how people interpret the world; you are literally drawing the same thing with subtle differences over and over again to just express a movement like that’s so nuts to me. I will be posting a more in-depth step-by-step voice over tutorial on my patreon so please support me there! Here is the important text from the tutorial here: The list of things I think/consider whilst animating -what sense of motion do i want to express? -what sensation of dimension and depth do I want to achieve? -What personality or emotion do I want to convey and in what mediums can I find these expressions? And most importantly… Synthesizing yourself and your art! Naming a sense of motion Before I begin an animation, I first decide what feeling of motion I want to express and then identify it with a single word. Typically, the word I always turn to define my animation is MUSICALITY. Musicality is another word to describe motion with an emphasis on musical gestures. I always pick and time the audio FIRST before I ever begin animating. I do this by letting the audio play and mark keyframes to the lowest and the highest points of the musical gesture and this all depends on one’s own personal sense of musicality. Other words you can use to find your own personal sense of motion could be rhythmic, light, weighted, motivic, abstract, or any word you can think of as long as you can name it and make it your own! Dimension and Depth A sense of dimension and depth is quintessential to make any animation immersive! It is easier now more than ever to animate with a greater sense of depth thanks to amazing tools like Blender’s grease pencil which allows one to animate within a three dimensional space! Depth, dimension, and volume can really bring any character uniquely to life, for no character or creature has the same volume, dimension, or life like any other. An Animated Personality My favortie part about animating is figuring out how to incorperate very specific feelings and emotions that only expressions through characters can convey. This is where I look inward AND outward, finding these feelings in myself but also from something beyond me. Emotions and feelings never stagnate. Emotions are another feeling of motion I always think about when animating. Synthesizing you and your art What makes animation such an interesting medium is that it’s all personal. Animation is about how you interpret motion and gesture. Blending the way you view the world into the world of your art can really heighten the immersivity of your work! I hope you enjoy! Thank you so much for watching and staying around! It is really hard to make all of LML alone but I do love making it! Your support has meant a lot! Here are my socials!
