One of the unique things about my farm is that my coop, chicken yard and free range areas are all protected by trees, which gives my flock protection and myself piece of mind. Since about half of my chickens, turkeys and guineas are free range during the day, they spend their time in the wooded areas of our property, where they can be ’wild,’ and spend their time scratching, digging, hunting for bugs and lounging beneath the azalea bushes and palmettos. I started out with just four hens a few years ago and am now up to 84 birds total. One thing I’m extremely proud of about our farm is that all of the eggs we don’t eat ourselves or give to our neighbors are donated to the fire department where my husband is a battalion chief.
