final frontier. In 1961, less than three percent of NASA’s 19,000 employees were Black. By 1965, the year of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, the Huntsville rocket center made, what was considered then, a bold move to employ more Black engineers.
The title of this episode, “No Prejudice in Space,“ is taken from a line in a speech made by President John F. Kennedy. This is a brief history of just some of the many African American technicians, mathematicians, engineers, and astronaut candidates who broke barriers in the early days of the United States space program. These men and women paved the way for boldly no one has gone before.
