Ultra-orthodox protesters clash with Israeli police in Jerusalem

Ultra-Orthodox Jews were blasted with a water cannon after they blocked a major junction in Jerusalem to protest the arrest of a draft-dodging student. Protesters taking part in the demonstration on Thursday said they had turned out in solidarity with an ultra-Orthodox man who had been arrested for avoiding the draft.  The sit-in led to scuffles with police, who arrested 46 people for disturbing the peace. The protesters had blocked traffic at the western entrance to Jerusalem, leading to the Tel Aviv highway. Police urged residents to avoid the intersection of Jaffa and Sarei Yisrael roads as they worked to remove the protesters.
