525-pound tuna sold for $788,000 at Tokyo fish market New Year’s auction

Before the loud bustle of Japan’s annual New Year’s auction at Toyosu Fish Market kicked off on Friday, people observed a moment of silence for those who died after a strong earthquake hit earlier this week in Ishikawa Prefecture. At the exciting annual tuna action in Tokyo, the highest priced bluefin tuna was from Oma, Aomori Prefecture and was sold for million yen (about $788,471 US dollars) and weighted 238 kilograms (almost 525 pounds). The selling price for this year’s tuna was more than three times compared to last year. The winning bidder is Akifumi Sakagami, Executive Chef at a sushi restaurant Ginza Onodera. He said he was hoping to lighten up the new year after the tragic series of quakes in Japan that began on Monday.
