In recent years, there has been a common misconception about lockback knives; people assume that because of how the lock operates, that they could never have smooth action - for the most part, this has been the case. To create this smooth opening, he designed the lock back to have a ceramic ball on the inside of it, which would interface with the tang of the blade. The idea being that there was less surface area contacting the blade so the opening would be smoother than a typical lockback.
