Booming Tourism, Housing Challenges: Life Aboard a 153-Year-Old Schooner

For six months out of the year, Captain Noah Barnes welcomes guests aboard the Stephen Taber, a 153-year-old schooner off the coast of Rockland, Maine. He says rising costs since 2019 are a challenge he has passed along to passengers, yet he is nearly fully booked through the season’s end in October, part of an upward travel budget trend. He’s also clear-eyed about the economy for others: he’s raised pay for his crew and yet some members choose to live aboard the ship due to high housing costs on the mainland.
