A striking metaphor unfolds in this song by Dev Dungarpuri. When wisdom beckons and we follow the call, rain arrives with a crack of lightning. We plant the seeds of Hari’s name, and as true seekers we water this ’field of attention’. There aren’t many takers for this kind of harvest though. No one desires the fruits of contemplation - the jewels of Hari’s name. You must be your own customer. Recognise this true market, one that swings up and down in your own self, with the movement of your breath, the true home of Hari.
With deep gratitude to Naran Siju and his mandli of weavers from Bhujodi village in Kutch, Gujarat, for sharing this song, which I sing here with my students of Srishti. This concert was held in Dharampur, during a village yatra in Gujarat in Sept 2019. In the audience is popular Gujarati writer Dhruv Bhatt, organiser of our annual forays into rural Gujarat with the voice of Kabir and other mystics.
Words of the Song:
O swan
Let’s fly to that land
Where the guru of truth resides
Where crows turn into swans
Lightning glimmers and the sky
Pours down sheets of rain!
O swan
Drink from the cup of the Name
All your coming and going will end
Drink from the cup of the
Fearless Name!
A sandalwood plough turns the soil
When you plant jewels
A crop grows of the jewels of Hari’s name
True seekers water it well
Jewels lie strewn in the field
But the world just walks by
When a true connoisseur comes along
They’ll sell for a worthy sum
In the city of this body-self
An upside-down market bustles
O swan, be a true merchant
Trade in these pearls, rubies and gems
See Hari in that which comes and goes
Get free of cycles of return
Dev Dungarpuri has spoken thus
Your fortunes will take a turn
