"How we stood at Shipka in the clouds" — English subs and translation

Russian Empire, after 1878 Donate & Support: The song of the 13th Rifle Battalion (later regiment) about the heroic defense of the Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, composed by Anton Shmakov, a non-commissioned officer of this unit. Like any folk soldier’s song, there are many variations of it and the song was well-known. Some notes to the lyrics: By “Sulejman“ here is meant Süleyman Hüsnü Pasha, commander of the Ottoman troops in the Battle of Shipka; “Aman” means in this case a cry for mercy, while “Allah” is an appeal to God. In this video, the song is performed by the “Valaam“ Choir. Portrayed by Field Marshal Iosif Gurko (1828—1901), one of the most famous and prominent commanders of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877—1878, whose army played one of the most important roles at the victorious battle of Shipka.
