UPDATE, 26/3/2022: The bill I mentioned towards the end of the video has passed Western Australian parliament, which will permit the government to acquire/demolish what’s left of Wittenoom. More info can be found here:
Between the 1940s and 1960s, an asbestos mine operated out of the town of Wittenoom, Western Australia. Mine owners CSR did little to safeguard their workforce, who have suffered diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma as a result of their asbestos exposure. Wittenoom’s mines shut in 1966, and today it is a ghost town. This short documentary is an attempt to chronicle the story of Wittenoom and how it may be the most dangerous town in Australia. Though Wittenoom is an essentially abandoned town today, people still visit and come into contact with asbestos there. They really shouldn’t.
If you’re interested in learning more about Wittenoom and the individual stories of those who lived and worked there, I highly recommend looking at the Australian Asbestos Network’s website on the town - it goes into a lot of detail and has some audio interviews included:
