Big congratulations and aloha to Windward CC and Ko‘olaupoko’s own Kumu Hula Frank Lehua Kawaikapuokalani Hewett for his achievement of teaching hula for 50 years within our community. Kumu Kawaikapu’s golden anniversary also coincides with the honor of being inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame at the end of the month. To celebrate this incredible achievement, we premiere a special Ke Ao Mālamalama o Ka Hula episode in which Kumu Kawaikapu becomes the interviewee! Kumu Hula Maelia Loebenstein Carter makes a guest appearance as she sits down to talk story with Kumu Kawaikapu about his life and experiences as a kumu, a haku mele, a mo‘opuna, and a tūtū man. Ke Ao Mālamalama o Ka Hula: The Enlightenment of Hula is a talk story series featuring some of Hawaiʻi’s most celebrated and accomplished kumu hula hosted by world renowned songwriter, kumu hula and Windward CC lecturer Frank Lehua Kawaikapuokalani Hewett. Intimate talk story and panel discussions offer a deeper understanding and appreciation for the traditional ways of learning hula and “becoming” a kumu hula.
