ECMO Explained - What It is and How It Works

What is ECMO? Health Ed Solutions lead instructor Mark Dzwonkiewicz explains what extracorporeal membrane oxygenation really is and how it works. ECMO is a life saving therapy that provides oxygen to one’s blood and circulates it throughout the body like one’s heart would do. This process occurs outside the body and is also referred to as ECLS, or extracorporeal life support. ECMO is similar to a heart-lung machine that is used during heart surgery. However, ECMO can be used for prolonged periods of time. ECMO takes over the work of the heart and lungs temporarily, so they can take the time to heal and rest. Health care providers resort to using ECMO when typical treatments are not successful. ECMO will not cure lung or heart disease - it only provides the heart and lungs extra time to rest and hopefully this will allow them to heal. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more lessons!
