Various of blood on the ground inside the store STORYLINE: An airstrike hit a bustling marketplace in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing several shoppers and wounding dozens, witnesses said. Palestinians had been buying meat and vegetables at the local market when the explosion hit, they said. The number of killed is still unknown as rescuers search the rubble but several bodies had already been recovered and many people were rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment, where relatives and doctors wept over bloodied children covered in dust. It was the latest deadly Israeli airstrike on Gaza, part of an intense bombardment in retaliation for Hamas’ unprecedented Oct. 7 attack on Israel. The war, in its 18th day Tuesday, is the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides. The Hamas-run Health Ministry said at least 5,087 Palestinians have been killed and 15,270 wounded. In the occupied West Bank, 96 Palestinians have been killed and 1,650 wounded in violence and Israeli raids since Oct. 7. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, mostly civilians who died in the initial Hamas rampage.
