Visit Visit our website This short anti-drug and substance abuse education film, “Your Amazing Mind“ shows how the human brain works; the film also displays the dangers of substance abuse and the various effects of different substances on the mind. Official summary: Discusses the importance of man’s brain power in the progress of civilization. Explains dangers of the many commonly misused drugs and their effects on man’s most precious possession-his mind. The film opens with a rendition of the ride George Washington had taken through Mount Vernon to Philadelphia in 1789 (:15). George is pictured in a red Cadillac taking the same ride as the film notes all the tools necessary to build this car were on the Earth at this time (:26). It only took an innovative mind to bring the car to reality (1:03). The Wright Brothers take to the skies for the first time (1:28). This lead to further air travel development as passenger planes from airlines such as United, transport travelers with ease today (1:36). A barren desert is made lush with the introduction of a dam (2:24). Modern farm machinery enables effective and rapid work (2:37). An idea turned coal, water and air into synthetic fibers (2:46). A fashion designers fixes an outfit (2:52). Astronauts are propelled into space (3:27). Our minds also have the ability to organize our daily lives (4:07). A young girl stops at the stop sign as her brain has instructed her to do so (4:17). The mind can also be upset easily (4:52) by improper use of medications and substances. An ambulance flashes as a body is loaded onto the stretcher warning viewers drugs can upset the normal functions of the brain and body (5:33). Some medications are designed to heal us when sick or enable better functions of our mind and body (5:53). A doctor delivers a patient a prescription detailing the proper use of the chemical (6:02). Amphetamines speed up the body and brain’s processes (6:14) while barbiturates are considered a downer (6:31). A speed user has their pulse checked (7:12). Inhaling chemicals such as glue damages brain cells (7:51). A newspaper headline details the dangers of inhaling hairspray as one perished from the fumes (8:18). A man smoking a marijuana cigarette steps into his vehicle (8:54). He is pictured in a car wreck shortly after (9:27). The film notes LSD was originally considered to be a cure for mental health ailments as it brought out the symptoms of insanity (9:36). Dr. J. Thomas of UCLA denies any medical use and states repeated use of the substance can alter cells within the body (6:59). A female is shown thrashing on a stretcher while experiencing a “bad trip” (10:49). An officer arrests a narcotics dealer on the side of the road (11:24). A man begins to experience withdraw in prison (11:56) as these substances also affect the mind and body as they exit the system. Youth discuss substance abuse (13:34) noting that you inevitably miss out on the good aspects of life (13:41).
