All the Machiavellianism, all the darkness of the character, the last resort of the Niebelungen to get the ring, is translated by this terrifying performer. Marta Mödl (4:01:30) is a legendary Brünnhilde, passionate, human and of a moving sensitivity. Everything is gathered to make this Twilight of the Gods one of the greatest recordings in the history of the Opera. Wagner uses the chorus as a means to reinforce the cruelty that characterizes Hagen (2:20:30). The scenes with the chorus are also crucial since the crowd is taken as witness to Siegfried’s betrayal of Brünnhilde (act II scene 4). It is the betrayed lover who will cause the loss of the young mortal, revealing to his enemies his Achilles’ heel. One of the most impressive funeral marches in the history of music then resounds (3:46:25), a sombre setting for the hero’s death. Brünnhilde discovers the terrible machination, and, mad with pain, sets herself on fire. The ring sinks into the Rhine where it was born, announcing the twilight of the gods. The Twilight of the Gods is perhaps the most monumental opera in the history of music: the more the world of the Ring seems to be engulfed, the more time stretches and suspends, and gives us to contemplate its slow and tragic sinking. Wagner makes this shipwreck into three long acts of a single flow, crowned by the immolation of the Valkyrie, the flaming pyre where the old world is consumed and from which the new humanity is born.
