It was composed when Mao Zedong, the leader of the new socialist China, visited the Soviet Union to celebrate the 70th birthday of Soviet leader Josef Stalin. At that point, the two nations were still close allies and both adhered to Marxism-Leninism. However, in 1956, Nikita Khrushchev, the leader after Stalin, completely dismissed and renounced Stalin.
