The Human Battery - Mobile energy of the 21st Century

In today’s society we demand energy on the move. Phones, laptops and cars eat through a phenomenal amount of energy and chemists are looking to old and forgotten scientific phenomena to keep our world mobile. Could we stop our phones from dying just by using our own body energy? Can we turn ourselves into living batteries, harvesting our waste heat, movement and even energy directly from our blood?! Materials scientist Jamie Gallagher discussed energy harvesting and storage through the ages with a story that took us from the Curie’s early laboratories to the underwater World War 1 battles and finally to the exploration of the furthest reaches of our solar system.
