Argentina playmaker Ariel Ortega represented his country in three World Cups and was one of the first players to be considered Maradona’s replacement. After El Pibe D’Oro was suspended for drug use in 1994, Ortega was his most natural replacement. He wore the number 10 shirt for Argentina at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, but his addiction to alcohol stopped him from becoming a true great. At club level, he played for Valencia, Parma, Sampdoria and Fenerbahce, but his legacy will forever be tied with his boyhood club River Plate for which he played for 359 times.
