Russian President expresses intention to visit Pyongyang soon: N. Korea

이른 시일내 방북 의사 밝혔다는 푸틴 북러 밀착에 우려되는 점은? North Korea has officially confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will soon be visiting Pyongyang for the first time in more than two decades. Our Choi Min-jung explains how this could spark great concerns in and beyond the region, if realized. Russian President Vladimir Putin is soon expected to visit North Korea. Following North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui’s recent visit to Russia, Pyongyang’s state-run media announced Sunday that Putin expressed his intention to visit Pyongyang soon, and that the regime is ready to welcome the Russian President. “President Putin expressed his deep thanks once again for the invitation by the Chairman of the State Affairs Kim Jong-un to visit Pyongyang at a convenient time and expressed his willingness to visit the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea at an early date.“ South Korea’s Unification Ministry said Monday,.. that security concerns are growing with increasing cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. “South Korea and the international community are closely watching the areas where military cooperation is being strengthened in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. I would like to reiterate that Russia has a greater responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.“ The regime’s state media also hinted that Russia expressed gratitude for the North’s support in the war against Ukraine, amid allegations that Pyongyang provided weapons to Moscow. “The Russian Federation expressed deep thanks to the DPRK for extending its full support and solidarity to the Russian government and its people for the special military operation in Ukraine.“ One expert says that South Korea, the U.S., and Japan need to take action to stem the growing cooperation. “If North Korea and Russia’s close relationship cannot be controlled even to a certain extent, South Korea, the U.S., and Japan will very likely face significant challenges. Although their relationship is centered on military cooperation, it can be an important turning point that drives cooperation in all directions -military, diplomatic, security, political, economic, and social sectors as well.“ Experts say it is likely that the visit will come after the Russian presidential election scheduled for March. Putin’s trip to North Korea would reciprocate Kim’s visit to Russia last September, and would be his first visit to the regime in 24 years.
