The EPRDF took power as a TPLF-backed coalition of various allied groups that transformed the country from a military dictatorship into a federal state based on ethnic demographics. Civil war in many ways continued as the Oromo Liberation Front split from the EPRDF and continued it’s insurgency, while the Benishangul and Gambella regions fell into armed conflict. And war broke out between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 1998.
