Stormchase May 23, 2022 - Facing ’The Monster of Morton’, Texas

Compilation movie of the chase om May 23, 2022, which took me / us to the very western parts of Texas. Two messy rotating supercells that developed shortly after 5 p.m. in west Texas. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect, the risk of significant tornadoes deemed very low. It did not appear that ingredients necessary for twisters would overlap particularly well, and moisture was rather limited. However, the northernmost storm was able to take advantage of more readily available shear or turning of winds with altitude, and began to spin. The northern cell abruptly weakened, however, as the southern cell began taking over. That’s because it was blocking the northern cell’s inflow, or supply of warm, humid air. There was just enough moisture that the southern cell began to morph into an intense supercell with baseball-size hail in the course of barely 30 minutes.
