Today I focus on letting yourself make mistakes and get through the ugly stage, and letting yourself make mistakes without worrying about it, its all part of the process! Sketching is a fact-finding mission, not a finished painting, you are trying to find out how to capture what you want on paper; it may take a tries till you find what you like. Sketching and drawing are foundational skills, whatever genre of painting you do. Learning to simplify and observe and translate this onto the paper are equally as important for abstract landscape painters as for those that paint loose or realistically; unless you are painting non-representational landscapes, there has to be some basis to abstract from, which is where sketching comes in.
