He also suffered from hyperacusis, or sensitivity to loud noises.“ interview with Haden, 2004 : How are you handling your ear ailment? I have grown to adjust to the fact that I have very, very sensitive ears. The ear doctors tell me it’s like the volume is turned up in my head — every time I take a hearing test, it goes over the limit. Usually when people have my condition, which is called tinnitus, they start losing the highs and the midrange. And I’m just the opposite — my hearing is becoming more acute. So the ringing in my head, I just pretend like it isn’t there. But you know, I try to stay away from things that can damage your brain without you really realizing it. That Plexiglas shield you use onstage helps. I’ve found that everybody now, rock bands too, are using Plexiglas, especially when the drums are near somebody singing. And even symphony orchestras have it.
