Montreal’s 1st major snowstorm of season closes schools, leaves tens of thousands in the dark

Tens of thousands of households across Quebec are still without power after the first major winter storm of the season barreled through the region overnight. Many Montrealers began their Monday digging out from under massive snowbanks, and the city says 2,200 pieces of equipment and 3,000 employees have been deployed to clear and remove snow from the 10,000 kilometers of roads, sidewalks and bike paths. Residents such as Lara Envoy and her son, 13-year-old Luke Richards, spent the morning with brushes and shovels in their hands, attacking the 30 centimeters of snow — 10 centimeters more than Environment Canada predicted. With one snowstorm down, how many more are to come this winter? Global’s Dan Spector has more.
