One island, two countries: For more than 100 years Ireland has been split into British Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This divide has only been exaggerated by Brexit as the people of Northern Ireland had to leave the European Union together with the rest of the UK in 2020 – even though the majority of voters in “Ulster” voted for “Remain” just four years prior. The controversial EU-exit is now boosting Irish nationalist forces that might have been forgotten since the Good Friday Agreement and the end of the “Troubles”: Both republicans parties like Sinn Fein and militant dissident groups like the New IRA. While Sinn Fein has become the biggest political party in both Northern Ireland and the republic, the New IRA is already rated as a top security threat by the British Security Forces. This 60-minute documentary investigates in five chapters how Brexit has fuelled the Irish nationalist movement and questions how realistic the dream of a United Ireland really is today.
