How whales help the climate | Whale and Dolphin Conservation

The average whale captures as much carbon dioxide as 30,000 trees. By saving whales, we can help tackle climate change. Support Whale and Dolphin Conservation at: Whales distribute nutrients across the seas, boosting the production of phytoplankton which, in turn, captures as much carbon dioxide as four Amazon Rainforests every year. Whale poo is also full of nutrients and stimulates the growth of phytoplankton. It is estimated that phytoplankton produce at least half of the Earth’s oxygen. Each year, the bodies of dead whales take 145,000 tonnes of carbon to the ocean floor. The continued recovery of whale populations is a significant mitigation strategy to combat climate change. More whales mean: • more oxygen • more carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere • more nutrition for the marine ecosystem • more fish and… • more clean air to breathe for all of us. WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation is the leading charity dedicated to the protection of whales and dolphins.
