In this episode, narrated by Charles Romine, a mother visits the Johns Hopkins University Hearing and Speech Center (now the Department of Audiology) to get her son’s hearing issue diagnosed. The episode shows how doctors conduct different tests on the child to determine his specific issue, and the steps that are taken to improve his situation. The mother is also taken around the Center to see children and adults receive hearing training. At the end of the episode, the child is fitted with a hearing aid -- most likely one that used transistors -- and it is shown how he reacts to different types of sound. 0:09 Title “Young America Films Presents: A CBS Television Presentation”, 0:21 Intro sequence with words flying cross the screen, 0:38 Title “Johns Hopkins University and Hospital”, 0:41 Title “Hearing and Speech Center”, 0:48 Woman opens the door and welcomes a woman and her child, 1:12 Two men sitting behind glass with one narrating, 2:03 Child is sitting on a rocking horse, 2:16 a Doctor enters the room and begins speaking to the woman, 3:08 Narrators continue watching the interview through the glass, 4:57 Doctor begins winding up a jack in the box and the child does not respond at all to the sound of it coming out, 5:27 Doctor is whistling at the child and playing several sounds over a speaker to elicit a response but the child does not react, 6:15 the child is placed in a seat next to an audiometer and is hooked up to it, 6:52 Doctor puts tape on the child’s leg, 7:16 Headphones are placed on the child while the narrator continues talking, 8:18 Doctor is adjusting the dials on the audiometer, 9:20 ink writer is printing the change in the child’s skin resistance, 10:18 different sound levels are tested on the child and he responds each time, 10:46 Child is asleep on the mother’s lap, 10:51 Doctor begins explaining the diagnosis to the mother, 12:18 Doctor sits behind glass and demonstrates to the mother how her child hears, 15:05 Child is playing at a table as his mother speaks to him, 15:32 woman is training a child how to respond to sound while the parents watch,16:45 child begins playing with a fire engine, 17:04 a woman talks to two young girls and teaches them how to pronounce words while they are sitting in front of a board with letters, 18:40 a doctor behind glass is testing an adult women’s hearing, 19:21 Mother of the child walks into the room together with the doctor and begin talking to the women who was having her hearing tested, 23:03 Close up shot of the hearing aid made for the child, 23:15 the nurse puts the hearing aid on the child and begins making various sounds and he responds to the sounds she makes, 24:17 the child seems to be a bit overwhelmed by all the sounds being made but gets happier, 25:00 Closing Title “Johns Hopkins University Hearing and Speech Center”, 25:05 Credits.
