What Is the Beam Envelope Method?

The beam envelope method is a numerical method used for analyzing electromagnetic waves that travel primarily in one direction through large modeling domains. Examples include optical waveguides, ring resonators, couplers, and splitters. As compared to the full-wave solution, the beam envelope method is significantly faster and more efficient. Both the full-wave approach and beam envelope method are available for modeling electromagnetic waves in the Wave Optics Module, an add-on product to the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
