Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky. The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary.

The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary Animated Video Competition. @pinkfloyd #PinkFloyd #TDSOTM50 Submission 5 of 5: THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY. STORY / THEME. The beautiful aspect of the album is that the songs are continuous and merge into one another. I decided to take that concept and create a journey that follows a character continuously across the first 5 songs of the album. The journey of life; from pre-birth, to childhood, through to adulthood, to getting older and finally death. 01. Speak to me: - Pre Birth. This animation represents the biological, chemical and neurological stage at this part of life. 02. Breathe (In the air). - Childhood. This animation represents the lightness, calmness, carefree, joyousness and growth aspect during these early stages of our lives. 03. On the Run.- Adulthood. The animation represents heaviness, anxieties and responsibilities that come with our lives. Our worries and challenges centre around relationships, money, technology and work. How we are questioned and are controlled by systems of government, religion, technology and law. Rat in a maze and other Orwellian inspired concepts (George Orwell). 04. Time.- Getting older. This animation focuses around the passing of time. How our days seem to be on repeat. We wake, we go to work, we go home, we go to bed. The animation highlights this repetition, getting older and the deterioration of our lives. 05. The Great Gig In The Sky. - Death. This animation focuses around senseless and avoidable deaths in today’s society. Migrant deaths, hospital/ambulance waiting times, gang violence, cost of living and war could be avoided if governments and societies are willing to make the right decisions and understand each other for a more peaceful, fairer and stable future. TECHNIQUE. The whole animation was drawn and coloured by hand using 2D software on my iPad Pro. Some of the more complex camera moves were aided by using 3D camera layout as a guide. Video reference was used as inspiration and a guide to help create more complex animations. The animations were output as PNG image sequence to iCloud and composited together, edited and output using Adobe After Effects. INSPIRATION. The main reasons for undertaking this project were two fold. The original Pink Floyd music video animations are so iconic in our history, that I wanted to grab this opportunity to hopefully be a part of that. I was also fortunate enough to meet Ian Emes during my time at Birmingham City University. As someone that was also born in Birmingham, I was hoping that this would be an opportunity to follow a similar path. I’m saddened to hear of his passing and that he would not see the variety of submissions from everyone who took part in this competition. BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEO LOG. Since starting this project in early February 2023, I decided to record a video log to document the process and my thoughts of the project. LINK COMING SOON! COPYRIGHTS.
